Last week I was talking to the Fed Ex Driver at work. As always I got on the subject of Dogs! He was going to buy an Australian Sheppard. I almost yelled “NO”. But instead I composed myself and explained the benefits of adopting and that there were rescue’s for all sorts of breeds. I showed him the pictures of my dogs and how wonderful saving them felt. He came by yesterday and made a point of coming in to let me know he’s been scouring the rescue sites and will definitely adopt. I jumped up and hugged him. At that moment my boss walked by and made the comment “do you always hug the delivery drivers!”

"They are my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. They are the part of me that can reach out into the sea. They have told me a thousand times over that I am their reason for being; by the way they rest against my leg; by the way they thump their tails at my smallest smile; by the way they show they hurt when I leave without taking them. (I think it makes them sick with worry when they are not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, they are delighted to forgive. When I am angry, they clown around to make me smile. When I am happy, they are joyful. When I am a fool, they ignore it. When I succeed, they brag. Without them, I am only another woman. With them, I am all-powerful. They are loyalty itself. They have taught me the meaning of devotion. With them, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. They have brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. There head on my knee can heal my human hurts. There presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. They have promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need them. And I expect I will - as I always have. They are my dogs."

So nice to be back at the shelter, sort of. Not that I don't love working with the dogs there, because I absolutely do. I just hate to worry about the dogs who just find it so hard to get a home. When I'm there and seeing all the dogs so desperately hoping to get out and go home, I start to feel desperate as well. I've started attending the dog training class again under the auspices of Rayna Barker. She is an incredible trainer who really has a big heart. She's helped so many of our dogs. The class is a lot of fun and hopefully we will be able to help these dogs and impart our knowledge to others. Here are a few dogs that could definitely use some help! Traffic A1039140 This little guy is pretty cool. He sort of made his reputation at the shelter early on by being kind of persnickity with other dogs in the kennel. He got moved out to his own digs, however, he can be fine with some dogs. He is definitely a head strong little dude. However, he is totally manageable with the right person and situation. I don't think Traffic is a good fit for a family with kids. He's too temperamental. I think he'd love an older person or couple who has eyes only for him. We had him at an adoption event a while back he did pretty well considering what I had heard about him. He really a good boy and just needs some reinforcement in the right direction. He really needs to get out of the shelter soon!! Shyla A1038056 Shyla is a playful and wonderful dog. She gets along with other dogs when properly introduced. She has lots of energy and enjoys playing a lot. She's in other videos playing as well. She's fabulous!!! This is not a good dog for a sedentary person who just wants to cuddle and watch movies. This girl is a young mover and shaker. I bet she'd love to go for a run. She needs out of the shelter ASAP!!! Coco A1055550 Not sure why cutie pie little Coco is STILL at the shelter. What the heck? She couldn't be cuter and is a total lap dog. She'd be terrific with an older person looking for a companion. Marty A1061203 Don't know much about Marty except he's very friendly to people. What a cute dog! He has that Corgie thing going on obviously. He is very adorable and peppy. More to come on Marty later... Shadow A1005697 This girl was at the shelter a few months back and was returned for a reason which always sounds ridiculous to me, "No time." What? What did you think having a dog was, no effort? I'm baffled by people who adopt a living thing and expect it to just co-exist. Anyway, nothing else was mentioned about Shadow so I figure she's just back where she started. First off, this is a SMART dog. Very smart. She learns very fast and seems to really enjoy it. She isn't a dog that can just be around without doing something. Shadow definitely needs training and some boundaries. For this dog, the worst thing you could do is throw her in the backyard and forget about her. She'd be so bored and frustrated. She likes people, food and interaction. I think she'd be a terrific dog for agility. She's a great size and has plenty of energy. Moreover, she needs something to do. Not a great dog for a newbie as her energy and strength make her a handful. However, for a dog savvy person, she's star material! Contact: www.laanimalservices.com Don't let another minute go by without adopting a great animal from the shelter!!!!

Food for Your New Puppy - How to Feed Healthy and Nutritious

The most important time to feed great food is when your puppy is young. Great nutrition helps build a solid foundation, upon which your puppy can live long and prosper.

Puppies, as a general rule, require high protein, balanced fat, mineral-rich diets (giant breed dog owners should discuss food with their vets and breeders). Not all raw diets are high protein: some popular, lower-cost raw diets are mostly fat, and probably should not be fed to puppies.

The actual fat content of a dog food is not always shown on the label because fat is listed as a minimum. A label can read “6% fat (minimum)” and actually be 18% fat! The best way to tell how much fat is in a raw diet is to go to the company’s website and find out the amount of calories per ounce in the product. Lean, high protein foods appropriate for puppies should have 25 to 40 kcal/ ounce, while the fatty foods, which should probably not be fed to puppies (or any dog, in my opinion), have 50 to 65 kcal per ounce. (Fat has more than twice the calories per ounce than protein).

It's also important to feed puppies a variety of healthy foods, rotating the different meat and fat sources, so they get accustomed to eating almost anything. Many puppies brought up on just one food have difficulty adjusting to variety of foods later in life. Variety is natural and healthy. Just as you would not want your child to eat just one food all the time, you should not feed your puppy one food all the time.

In a future blog, I’ll write more about the importance of rotating meat and fat sources for a healthy brain. That’s the topic of my new book, The Canine Ancestral Diet: One Day a Week to a Healthier Dog, which will soon be published by Dogwise Publishing.

This entry was written by Steve Brown, a blog author at darwinspet.com/blog

HAPPY AT WEST VALLEY ANIMAL SHELTER! A1054577 "Happy" is at the West Valley Animal Center in Chatsworth, the phone number is (818) 756-9325 (another number is 888-452-7381 x146) and his ID number is A1054577. The photos below are of the dog when he was originally found. Long story short, this dog got lost on a hiking trail and was later found by this nice person who literally saved him from the brink of death. His guardians were looking for him but no one knows who they are now... for the whole story see http://doggiematchmaker.blogspot.com CONTACT is Marcelle Brothers (818) 516-3634 Apparently Fresno Bully Rescue has offered to take this dog but they need $750 to buy the equipment to house him. This is the normal practice and having had FBR rescue many dogs from West LA I think they do very well by the dogs they rescue. All donations are tax deductible! Make sure you let them know the money is for Happy from West Valley LAAS. Thanks!

I have been a volunteer with LA Animal Services for almost 4 years now. I was originally lured in by the development of a dog training program that the wonderful volunteer coordinator at West LA was starting. The reason I say I was lured in is that at the time no dog who was in the training program would be put down which of course made it a whole lot more palatable. I was also studying to be a dog trainer so I needed the experience anyway. Plus, I loved the idea of helping to save shelter dogs. Well, so much has changed since then. Long gone are the days of a safe haven for any dog at LAAS, even at West LA which was always considered the best chance for a great dog. By great dog I mean, a dog without "issues." This would include the following description of the dog being, non-reactive, non-aggressive, non-barking, non-chewing, non-fearful, non-anxiety, non-jumping,and basically perfect. Not that there are very many of these dogs alive in the world but we have had a few that seemed pretty close. Naturally, my favorites are always the good-hearted, fearful, silly dogs that if we could just get them out of the shelter they would prove themselves to be the greatest dog ever. That has actually happened so I'm not insane for thinking this way. Anyway, this blog is all about shelter dogs and the shelter in general. The how, who and what the hell of what goes on over there. I hope you find something in it that compels you to read it and possibly get involved at your local shelter. Talk soon!

Spreading The Love Of Dog

After an incredibly sad breakup my neighbor said "You need a dog" and took me against my will to the West LA Shelter. I hadn't had a Dog since I was 12 after my childhood Dog Midnight died from eating snail poison. I swore I never wanted one again. The experience was almost too much for me to bear.

At the shelter I played with several other Dogs while one particular puppy watched me intently. There was something about him, I don't know, but he would not take his eyes off of me. He actually spoke to me through his eyes, but I was still a bit scared of him, having been bitten by a Shepherd as a kid.

Just as I was about to leave Dogless, I looked back, and the puppy with the eyes was still staring, pleading, and beckoning me back to give him a chance. I remember it like it was yesterday. I actually said out loud, "Okay, let's play." We have never been apart since.

I have never made a better decision in my entire life. I named him "Cody" as in Codependent.... Sort of a play on words I guess. And codependent we were.

Some people say that I "saved" him, but in all reality we both know, that he saved me.

It took me 23 years to get another Dog, and Cody reminded me once again what true love and loyalty really is. I rediscovered that the love you give a Dog, will be returned to you a million times over. Trust me. Dogs don't judge. They only know the purest form of love.

Shortly after, in 1998, I started dating again, and was seeing this seemingly cool lady. Things were moving along nicely until she said... "Sweetheart, you know if I move in 'The Dog' has got to go..."I never called her again, nor did I return any of her calls.

It was just Cody and me. Happy and in love.

It was from that moment, I knew in my heart that "Dog people" need to meet, interact, and be connected with other "Dog people."

I remember that day looking at a picture frame with Cody's baby picture in it. The frame said "Qui me amat, amet et Canus meum (St. Bernard AD 1150) Love Me Love My Dog" and I thought, "It's really as simple as that."

Cody and I continued to live our lives in love with each other, sharing every possible moment. We shared the couch, the bed, chips, french fries, green beans, edamame, carrots, and pretty much every minute of every day. I purposely designed my life so that I worked at home so I was able to spend all my time with my best friend.

Eventually I got married, moved to a lakefront home in Canada, adopted my other two amazing boys Skylar, then Dylan, spent as many months as possible swimming in the lake with my Boys, the rest of the time freezing, got divorced, and made sure that in the divorce settlement that I got the Dogs. Nothing else mattered. Nothing.

Then, the stock market crashed. The housing market crashed. I lost my business, sold my home, all the furniture, and all my material possessions at a loss, and took what was important to me. My Dogs Cody, Skylar, and Dylan, my photos, my laptop, my bronze Buddha, a few pairs of 501s, some tees, and the few bucks I had left in my pocket. I bought a small RV and headed off "home" to Los Angeles to restart my life.

I had been working on developing LoveMeLoveMyDog.com for quite some time and wanted to launch it from the Dog park in Marina Del Rey that I had taken Cody to as a puppy. Sort of a "rebirth" I guess, at 46.

I thought I would live in the RV, traveling around happily "Spreading The Love Of Dog" as the site slogan says. Bad idea.Bad, bad idea. Living on the streets of Los Angeles in an RV is not easy. It was quite eye opening to see so closely, and to some extent be a part of the suffering of so many that are homeless, and on the streets, especially those with Dogs who they love, and who in return love them unconditionally.

Living like this took it's toll on me. Mentally. physically and spiritually. But we had nowhere else to go. We were stuck in the RV on the streets of Los Angeles. Absolutely nobody would rent to us. At times I would awaken in the middle of the night in a panic, parked on some side street that in the past I would have casually driven by. I often felt hopeless and wanted to quit. The depression was severe. But I knew in my heart that my Dogs relied on me to survive, in order for them to survive. Because of this love and sense of obligation to them, LoveMeLoveMyDog.com had to launch and flourish.

This painful experience on the streets only strenghtened my drive to make this site a reality. Whatever the personal cost, I owed it to Cody, Skylar, Dylan, the memory of Midnight, and all the other Dogs and their Dog loving humans to make this a reality. We needed a targeted, cruelty conscious, forward thinking, social network, not motivated by greed, but motivated by a true and honest, love for Dogs. A site of our own, in order to meet and network with other like minded Dog lovers to promote rescue, encourage spay and neutering, make friends, show off our Dogs, learn about cool new products, exchange ideas, interact, and help Dogs. I felt the need to create a single voice and visibility for Dogs on the whole, in order to increase awareness of the situations and suffering that they face in our modern, and all too often cruel world.

Even though I felt that the site was not quite ready I decided to launch it anyway from the RV, on the streets of Marina Del Rey, parked where Cody played as a puppy. Sink or swim, I clicked the button and we went live.

My whole life has led up to "just one click." LoveMeLoveMyDog.com had begun. If the Universe is kind enough to allow my dream to reach it's fruition, LoveMeLoveMyDog.com will be the only place one needs to go to find out everything about helping Dogs, making friends with other Dog lovers, being there for dogs in need, and learning responsible Dog guardianship.

If just one Dog is rescued with the help of LoveMeLoveMyDog.com then the site is a success, and all the risk, time, and financial loss was worth it. If a million Dogs are rescued, then all the better. All in all though, it is about creating a better life for Dogs and the humans who love them, and who they love in return. Whether they are in a home or homeless, skid row or death row, the penthouse or the poorhouse. We brought them into our world and we owe them a life worth living. Hopefully LoveMeLoveMyDog.com can be of service to reach that goal.

I will also be looking to find and promote great smaller companies who create great Dog products not because they see big dollars as part of the "Pet Industrial Complex", but because they love Dogs. And because they love Dogs, they saw a need for a particular product or service to make life better for Dogs, and they created it. If their heart is in the right place, they deserve to succeed, and I would like to help them.

So here I am, at the beginning of my journey, which has taken me years to get to, looking to the stars, and to people's hearts to help me create the largest philanthropic, cruelty free, Dog lovers community and rescue network on the planet. A site dedicated to the love of dogs, and a loving lifestyle towards all living sentient beings. Hopefully this site will outlast me for many years to come. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for being a part of this journey.

Lastly, I need to say that this site will forever be the legacy of its inspirations, Cody, Skylar, Dylan and my long lost love Midnight. To them I owe the gratitude of feeling what true undying dedication and love is. Whether I was rich, poor, fat, thin, healthy, sick, happy, sad, or whatever, my Dogs always loved me. Unconditionally.

I am honoured to attempt to repay that love to them, and all Dogkind with this site.

Puppy Play! And how it relates to Puppy Nipping...a brief overview. New dog owners are often terrified of the first time their new pal gets together with other pups. The play is ROUGH! and can be scary. In the animal world communication is done through the mouth and body language, allowing your puppy to engage in rough play teaches them about mouth control and how hard is too hard when nipping to communicate. In the litter, puppies tug on one another's ears, skin, and tails, when it becomes to hard the receiver yelps letting the offender know "that is too much." This play is translated into the life skill of "how hard can I use my mouth to get a response without hurting the person or animal I am trying to communicate with." When a puppy nips at you he or she is either trying to communicate or play, the best way to deter such nipping is to stop the game, firmly but quietly say no, and walk away from the puppy. Dogs are pack oriented so the simple act of leaving tells the puppy that he or she has done wrong in a stronger way than using our voices will. Of course, this method takes longer to work but has longer lasting effects over other methods that can be used because you are communicating on a level that the puppy understands. And, this doesn't usually work quick enough for families with severe nippers! For More information call to speak to a Junglefari Trainer, we are always happy to help!
